In a school Built by Parents Themselves, Valley Gakuen is close to San Fernando Road and the golden State Freeway, just off of Lankershim Blvd. in Sun Valley. The school is open every Saturday at the Valley Japanese Community Center.
Established over 60 years ago, the school - along with the community center - has grown over the years. In 1980, to handle increases in enrollment, the parents of the school constructed a new classroom building by themselves, a historic event in the local Japanese American communitty. Valley Gakuen has classes in the elementary, Junior High, and Senior High school divisions.
From the 5-year-old Nyumon class, through to adult classes, experienced teachers strive to make the ”living Japanese” lessons enjoyabe. And at the same time, Valley Gakuen provides a good opportunity to learn the culture and social custom of Japan, as part of community center where activities include Judo, Kendo, Karate, Calligraphy and traditional dancing for the annual Obon festival. Pparents are active participants in school efforts, working hard to support the teachers and make a better school.
